A World in Transit

Change is the only constant," wrote Heraclitus.

Yet there are periods when the pace and scale of change is so striking that change itself becomes a primary characteristic of the times. A world in a state of continuous change, where change transforms living conditions, and living conditions transform ways of life, causing further change.

Climate

Climate change is accelerating. Now more than ever, ambitious and effective global action to address the impacts and future risks of the climate crisis is critical and urgent. Recent momentum behind governments’ climate commitments is encouraging. However, turning increased political ambition on climate emergency into outcomes that ensure a net-zero transition by 2050 remains the major challenge.

A growing number of corporates, financial institutions and institutional investors are making increasing efforts to assess physical and transition risks, and to publish climate transition plans to achieve net-zero emissions. In turn, financial markets are beginning to integrate climate transition risks and opportunities into investment decision making.

A successful response to climate change will require coordination and collaboration among governments, businesses, and individuals, all working together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to a low-carbon future.

Biodiversity plays a crucial role in addressing climate change. Protecting and conserving biodiversity as part of a comprehensive approach to addressing climate change is essential. This includes reducing deforestation and habitat loss, protecting endangered species, and implementing sustainable land-use practices that balance the need for economic development with the protection of biodiversity.

City

At the moment, half of the world’s population lives in cities. Within two decades, this figure will increase to 60 per cent. Extreme wealth and extreme poverty occur alongside each other, but cities remain magnets that attract huge masses of people. For many, cities offer the opportunity for work and income, education and better facilities.

Although cities only cover a few percent of the earth’s total land surface, they are the locations where most of the world’s scarce resources are being used. Ubanisation worldwide, therefore, is turning these cities into crucial links in the quest for a more sustainable world.

But what role could cities really play in a sustainable transition? Innovations partly originate from the diversity and dynamics that are so characteristic of cities. A proper understanding of this complexity is therefore a prerequisite for the development  of sustainable cities.

At Groundstation we

Energy

The energy transition is a pathway toward transformation of the global energy sector from fossil-based to zero-carbon by the second half of this century. At its heart is the need to reduce energy-related CO2 emissions to limit climate change. Decarbonisation of the energy sector requires urgent action on a global scale, and while a global energy transition is underway, further action is needed to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change. Renewable energy and energy efficiency measures can potentially achieve 90% of the required carbon reductions.

The energy transition will be enabled by information technology, smart technology, policy frameworks and market instruments. IRENA has assessed decarbonisation pathways through REmap, and is equipped to support and accelerate the energy transition by providing the necessary knowledge, tools and support to Member countries as they increase the share of renewable energy in their power sectors.

Space

The world is entering a new phase of the Space Age. Launch costs have reduced significantly and the number of actors launching satellites into orbit will continue to increase. Major powers have set up space forces and are militarizing and weaponizing space in support of terrestrial warfighting capabilities. Lower costs of space travel are opening the door to the establishment of extraterrestrial footholds. Experts have identified 17,000 asteroids which can be exploited for resources’ extraction, with one estimate putting the size of the space industry at $2.7tn per year by 2050.
